New Patients at Loukas Dentistry, Park Ridge
Two dentists, one family practice, and forty years in the same community. Here is exactly what happens at a first visit, so nothing about it is a surprise.
What a first visit actually involves
- We listen first. What is bothering you, what you want to fix eventually, and anything about dentistry you find difficult.
- Examination. Teeth, gums, bite, and an oral cancer screening.
- Digital imaging. Low-dose digital X-rays, and CBCT 3D scanning where it is genuinely needed rather than routinely.
- Cleaning, when your gum health allows it at that appointment. If deeper treatment is needed first, we will explain why.
- A plan you can read. Written, prioritised into urgent and elective, with costs.
You will not be sold a smile makeover you did not ask about. If your teeth are fine, we will say so.

Your medication list
Including supplements. Several common medications affect healing, bleeding and dry mouth, and it changes how we treat you.
Completed forms
Fill in patient forms beforehand, or arrive 15 minutes early to do them here.
Any existing appliance
Dentures, partials, nightguards or retainers. They tell us a great deal about your bite and what has been going wrong.
If you are anxious about this
A meaningful share of our new patients have not seen a dentist in years, sometimes decades, and expect to be told off. That is not what happens here.
Tell us when you book and we will allow more time. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available, and a first visit can be limited to talking and looking, with nothing done until you are ready.
Two dentists under one roof
Dr. Thanasi Loukas, DMD handles implants, oral surgery and reconstruction, placing implants and restoring them himself rather than referring the second half elsewhere.
Dr. Maria Loukas, DDS handles family and preventive care, and has spent years doing volunteer dental work overseas.
Practically, that means a family can be seen in one practice on one trip, and complex treatment does not get handed to a stranger. Read more about the practice.

New patient questions
How long is the first appointment?
Allow around an hour. Exam, imaging and discussion take time if they are done properly, and rushing a first visit is how things get missed.
Do you see children?
Yes. See kids dentistry. Families are often booked back to back so one trip covers everyone.
Can I just come for a second opinion?
Absolutely, and it is a common reason people call. Bring any treatment plan or imaging you have been given and we will tell you plainly whether we agree with it.
What if I need urgent treatment?
Say so when you call. Emergencies are triaged by what is actually wrong, not by how long you have been a patient. See emergency dentistry.
