Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment in Park Ridge, IL | Loukas Dentistry
Is Your Airway Holding You Back?
Snoring, poor sleep, and daytime fatigue can all trace back to a restricted airway. At Loukas Dentistry, we use 3D CBCT imaging to measure your actual airway size — and treat it without surgery or a CPAP machine.
The Loukas Difference
We Don’t Guess.
We Measure Your Airway.
Most dental offices that offer sleep apnea treatment rely on symptoms alone. At Loukas Dentistry of Park Ridge, we use our CBCT 3D cone beam scanner to take a precise measurement of your actual airway diameter — giving you real numbers, not assumptions.
This is the same advanced imaging technology used for dental implant surgery. When applied to airway analysis, it gives us a three-dimensional view of your nasal passages, oropharynx, and hypopharynx — the structures most responsible for snoring and sleep apnea.
Your Airway By the Numbers
Our CBCT scanner measures the minimum cross-sectional area of your airway. Here’s what those measurements mean:
— Severely Constricted
— Moderately Restricted
— Mildly Reduced
— Normal Airway
Measurements taken from CBCT 3D airway analysis. Results reviewed by Dr. Thanasi Loukas, DMD.
Is This You?
Signs Your Airway May Be Restricted
A constricted airway doesn’t always cause obvious symptoms. These are the most common signs we see in patients who benefit from airway treatment.
Loud or Chronic Snoring
Snoring is often the first sign of airway restriction. When air can’t flow freely, tissue vibration creates the snoring sound — and disrupts your partner’s sleep too.
Waking Up Tired
If you sleep 7–8 hours and still feel exhausted, your airway may be causing micro-arousals throughout the night that prevent deep, restorative sleep.
Morning Headaches
Reduced oxygen during sleep raises carbon dioxide levels, causing blood vessels to dilate. Many patients with restricted airways wake with daily headaches.
Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
There is a well-documented connection between airway restriction and nighttime teeth grinding. The jaw clenches as the body tries to reopen the airway during sleep.
Jaw Pain & TMJ
Chronic jaw tension from airway-related bruxism can cause or worsen TMJ disorder. Treating the airway often relieves jaw pain that didn’t respond to other treatments.
Diagnosed Sleep Apnea
If you’ve been diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA and can’t tolerate your CPAP, a custom oral appliance may be an effective, comfortable alternative.
Treatment Options
CPAP-Free
Snoring & Sleep Apnea Care
We offer two primary dental sleep medicine solutions, both custom-fitted to your bite and jaw anatomy.
Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)
A custom-fitted oral appliance that gently repositions your lower jaw forward during sleep, opening the airway and reducing tissue collapse. Highly effective for snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea. Comfortable, portable, and silent — no mask, no machine.
Tongue Retaining Device (TRD)
For patients whose tongue falls back and blocks the airway during sleep, a tongue retaining device holds the tongue forward, keeping the airway open throughout the night.
Oral Appliance vs. CPAP
| Oral Appliance | CPAP | |
|---|---|---|
| Noise | ✓ Silent | Machine noise |
| Travel | ✓ Pocket-sized | Bulky equipment |
| Comfort | ✓ No mask | Mask and straps |
| Compliance | ✓ 90%+ wear it nightly | 50% abandon within a year |
| Effectiveness | ✓ Mild – moderate OSA | All severity levels |
| Airway assessment | ✓ 3D measurement at Loukas | Sleep study only |
Our Process
What Happens at Your Airway Consultation
Most patients leave their first appointment already knowing their airway measurement — something their sleep specialist never showed them.
CBCT 3D Airway Scan
We take a low-radiation cone beam CT scan of your head and neck. The entire scan takes under 15 seconds. No discomfort, no impression material.
Airway Measurement & Review
Dr. Loukas reviews the 3D reconstruction with you chairside and shows you your actual airway diameter at its narrowest point. You’ll see exactly where and how much restriction exists. Under 5mm is severely constricted. 10–15mm is normal. Most snorers fall somewhere between.
Custom Treatment Plan
Based on your airway measurement, symptoms, and sleep history, Dr. Loukas recommends the appropriate oral appliance and explains expected outcomes. If your case requires a sleep study or specialist coordination, he’ll tell you honestly and help facilitate the referral.
Digital Impression & Appliance Fabrication
We use the iTero digital scanner (no messy impressions) to capture a precise model of your bite. Your custom appliance is fabricated and typically ready within 2–3 weeks.
Fitting, Adjustment & Follow-Up
We fit and adjust your appliance for optimal comfort and effectiveness. Follow-up appointments confirm the airway is responding as expected and that your symptoms are improving.
FAQ
Common Questions
Many medical insurance plans (not dental) cover oral appliance therapy for diagnosed sleep apnea. We can help you check your benefits. If you have a sleep apnea diagnosis from a physician or sleep study, coverage is more likely. Call (847) 696-1919 to discuss your specific plan.
Not always. If your primary concern is snoring rather than diagnosed sleep apnea, we can begin with the airway assessment and proceed directly to an oral appliance. If we find a severely restricted airway or suspect moderate-to-severe OSA, we may recommend coordinating with your physician for a sleep study first.
A standard night guard protects your teeth from grinding but does nothing to open the airway. A mandibular advancement device (MAD) is specifically designed to reposition the jaw forward, which opens the airway and often reduces grinding at the same time — because the two conditions are frequently connected through airway restriction.
Yes — and this is actually how most of our airway patients find us. A dental visit feels far less intimidating than a sleep clinic. We can do the airway scan, review the numbers together, and have an honest conversation about what treatment makes sense. Many patients are surprised to see their own airway measurement on screen — it makes the problem concrete and motivating.
Most patients with an airway diameter below 10mm experience noticeable symptoms. Those with measurements between 5–10mm typically respond very well to oral appliance therapy. Patients below 5mm have severely restricted airways and may need a combination approach or specialist co-management. Dr. Loukas will review your exact measurement and give you an honest assessment at your consultation.
