What to do right now

A tooth has been knocked out
Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, not water, and do not scrub it. If you can, place it back in the socket and bite gently on gauze. If you cannot, keep it in milk. Time matters more than anything else here, so call on your way.
A tooth is broken or chipped
Save any fragments in milk or saline. Rinse with warm water, use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek, and avoid chewing on that side. Sharp edges can be smoothed and the remaining tooth structure protected once we can see it.
Severe toothache or swelling
Rinse with warm salt water and use a cold compress. Do not place aspirin directly against the gum, which burns the tissue. Swelling can indicate infection and should be evaluated promptly rather than waited out.
A crown or filling came out
Keep the restoration if you still have it. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean. An exposed tooth is often sensitive and can fracture further, so it is worth being seen quickly even when it does not hurt much.
If it is the middle of the night

Go to a hospital emergency room now if you have any of the following. These are medical emergencies, not dental ones:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Swelling spreading toward your eye, under your jaw, or down your neck
- Bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure
- A head injury, loss of consciousness, or a suspected broken jaw
- Fever with facial swelling

What can be done in a single visit
Emergency care is about relieving pain, stabilising the injury, and protecting the tooth so you keep it. Depending on what we find, a first visit may include digital X-rays, CBCT 3D imaging, intraoral photography, bite evaluation, digital scanning, medication guidance, splinting and stabilisation, root canal therapy, a repair or crown, or implant planning when a tooth genuinely cannot be saved.

When it is your child in pain
A child with a toothache at bedtime, a tooth knocked out on the field, or a front tooth chipped on the edge of a pool is one of the most common calls we get, and one of the most stressful for a parent. Bring them in. We keep room in the schedule for children in pain.
For a baby tooth that is knocked out, do not try to put it back in the socket, because that can damage the permanent tooth forming underneath. For a permanent tooth, handle it by the crown, rinse it gently with milk or saline if it is dirty, and either place it back in the socket or keep it in milk until you reach us. Call on the way.

How quickly can I be seen?
We hold time for emergencies and offer same-day appointments when availability allows. Calling early in the day gives us the best chance of fitting you in, so phone (847) 696-1919 rather than waiting to email.
Can a knocked-out tooth really be saved?
Often, yes, but the window is short. An adult tooth that is kept moist and reimplanted quickly has a far better chance than one that has dried out. Handle it by the crown, store it in milk, and get to a dentist as fast as you reasonably can.
What actually counts as a dental emergency?
Pain that stops you sleeping or working, visible swelling, bleeding that does not settle, a tooth that has been knocked out or pushed out of position, and broken teeth with sharp or exposed surfaces. If you are unsure, call and describe it. We would rather tell you it can wait than have you sit on something that cannot.
