Nitrous Oxide
Mild sedation — Laughing Gas
- How it works: A soft nasal mask delivers a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen throughout your procedure. You breathe normally and feel relaxed within minutes.
- What you feel: A pleasant, warm, lightheaded sensation. Some patients feel tingling in their hands and feet. Most feel calm, relaxed, and even slightly euphoric.
- Pain: Nitrous oxide has mild analgesic properties. Combined with local anesthetic, most patients feel little to nothing during treatment.
- Awareness: You remain fully conscious and can communicate with Dr. Loukas throughout the procedure. You are relaxed, not asleep.
- Recovery: The effects wear off within 5 minutes of removing the mask. You can drive yourself home after most appointments.

Oral Triazolam Sedation
Moderate sedation — Halcion
- What it is: Triazolam (brand name: Halcion) is a short-acting benzodiazepine medication taken by mouth before your appointment. It is prescribed and monitored by Dr. Loukas.
- How it works: Triazolam produces deep relaxation, significantly reduces anxiety, and has a remarkable clinical characteristic — it can cause anterograde amnesia.
- Anterograde amnesia explained: You will remember arriving at the office. But during and after the procedure, the medication may prevent new memories from forming. Many patients have little to no recollection of what happened — they simply wake up and it’s over.
- Awareness: You are conscious and can respond to Dr. Loukas, but deeply relaxed and often in a dream-like state.
- Recovery: The sedative effect lasts several hours. A responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you until fully alert.
- Best for: Moderate to severe dental anxiety, longer or invasive procedures, patients who want maximum comfort and minimal memory of the experience.

Anterograde amnesia sounds clinical, but for anxious dental patients it is one of the most valuable effects possible. You come in. You get comfortable. Step by Step
Sedation Consultation
Dr. Loukas reviews your health history, current medications, anxiety level, and the procedure you need. He recommends nitrous oxide, triazolam, or a combination and answers all your questions before anything is scheduled.
Pre-Appointment Instructions (Triazolam)
If you are receiving oral sedation, Dr. Loukas provides a prescription for triazolam. You will be given specific instructions: when to take it, fasting requirements, and confirmation that a responsible adult will drive you and stay with you after.
Arrival & Relaxation
You arrive at the office and are comfortably seated. If using nitrous oxide only, the mask is placed. If you have taken triazolam, the medication will already be taking effect — you will feel calm, drowsy, and at ease before treatment begins.
The Procedure
Dr. Loukas completes your treatment while you remain in a relaxed or sedated state. With triazolam, many patients have little or no memory of this portion of the visit. You remain safe and monitored throughout.
Recovery & Discharge
